Naggar: An ancient town on Beas River

Naggar is located in between Kullu and Manali, 28 km from Kullu and 21 km from Manali. It is situated on the left bank of river Beas at an altitude of 1852 m. It commands extensive views of the valley and the Himalayas. Naggar is an ancient town founded by Raja Visudhpal and was the capital of Himachal Pradesh until 1460 A.D. The royal castle in Naggar has been transformed into a hotel by Himachal Tourism preserving its original style and structure. The view of the valley and the Himalayan peaks from the castle is breathtaking. Naggar is a famous tourist spot and ideal for a long stay as it is well connected and has many eateries and restaurants. Besides soaking in the beauty and tranquility of Naggar and eating local food there are other interesting things too.

•Castle
•Tripura Sundari Temple: Tripura Sundari Temple is located in the upper part of the village and is the main pilgrimage site for the people of Manali. It is a three storeyed wooden building designed in the form of a pagoda and is made of deodar wood and stone. It is a rare example of architecture
•Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery : Prof. Late Nicholas Roerich, a reputed artist had chosen Naggar as his residence when he came to India in 1929. The bungalow he lived in houses many rare paintings of the Himalayan range and has been converted into an art gallery. The gallery is open for visitors.
•Treks : The valley is ideal for several trek routes. Some major trek routs are- Chanderkhani Pass to Malana village, Jalori Pass to Shimla, and Pin Parvati Pass to Sarahan.
•White Water Rafting : The river Beas offers excellent opportunities for white water rafting.
•Kais Monastery: 51 km from Naggar (you can take a local bus ride or a taxi ride) is the beautiful village of Kais. There is a Buddhist monastery in Kais that is worth visiting.
•Jana Falls is a natural waterfall that is inside a small village called Jana. It is located near Naggar. The waterfall is very beautiful. The trek up the hill takes one closer to the waterfall for a closer view. On the way, there is a small shop that serves home-made local food.
