Himalayas are home to 14 mountain peaks higher than 8000 meters (26246 feet) collectively called eight thousanders, and interestingly, Annapurna was the first among these to be scaled.
Annapurna is considered to be one of the most difficult and challenging peaks in the world to climb, and surely a trek to its base camp will be quite an achievement for those bitten by the mountain bug. On this trail, you will not just get to touch base with the untouched nature of the remote Himalayan regions, but will also be able to experience the warmth of the local Nepalese culture, soak in the spectacular panoramic views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range and get a close-up look at massive peaks which are amongst the famous ‘eight thousanders’ .
This trek lies in central Nepal and commences from Nayapul which is reached by a short drive of an hour and a half from Pokhara.
Day 1: Reach Kathmandu
Arrive in Kathmandu on your own and transfer to the hotel. Spend the day taking rest.
Day 2: Drive to Pokhara
Your guide picks you up at your hotel early in the morning and escorts you to the bus station to catch a comfortable standard tourist bus to Pokhara. The bus will head west of the Kathmandu Valley and continue towards Western Nepal, following the Prithvi Highway along the Trisuli River. On arrival at Pokhra, check in to the hotel and spend the day resting.
Day 3: Drive to Nayapul (1,011 meters) and trek to Thikedunga (1,552 meters / 4-5 hours)
You will leave Pokhara around 8:30 AM by car. The road whirls through the scenic country side for about 1.5 hours to the start of the trek at Nayapul. This is the confluence of Modi River that comes down from Annapurna Base Camp and the Burungdi River. We follow Burungdi upstream climbing gradually for about 4-5 hours to Thikedunga. Thikedunga is a charming little village full of lodges where you spend the night.
Day 4: Thikedunga to Ghorepani (2,800 meters / 6 – 7 hours)
Start the day’s walk with a steep climb to village of Ulleri. 3,000 stone steps lead to Ulleri village which take about 2 hours to climb. From Ulleri the trail climbs gradually through the forest for another 4-5 hours until you reach Ghorepani which is at 2,800 m. The mountain pass overlooking the deep Kali Gandaki valley wedged between two eight thousand meter massifs of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna is where Ghorepani is located.
Day 5: Ghorepani to Pun Hill (3,200 meters / 1 hour) and Trek to Tadapani (2,647 meters / 5 hours)
Pun Hill is the most beautiful view point in the Annapurna Region. You hike for about 50 minutes to Pun Hill at 3,200 m for sunrise view over the Himalayan Peaks. You would see about 15 different peaks including Dhaulagiri I (Seventh highest at 8,167 m) Annapurna I (Tenth highest at 8,091 m) and Manaslu (Eighth highest at 8,156 m). After breakfast, we will head for the next destination of Tadapani for an overnight stay.
Day 6: Tadapani to Chhomrong (2,177 meters / 5-6 hours)
It’s a steep climb down of about 900 meters to the valley basin at Ghurjung River. You climb up slowly along the steep mountain side to Chhomrong which is perched high on a mountain ridge. Chhomrong is a fairly large Gurung Village at the corridor of Annapurna Sanctuary. The village offers a grand view of Annapurna South (7,219 m) and Machepuchare (6,993 m).
Day 7: Chhomrong to Dovan (2,600 meters / 5-6 hours)
Climb up to Sinwa in 3 hours after you trek down to Chhomrong khola (river). From here you enter the steep valley towards Annapurna Sanctuary at the buttresses of Annapurna South and Machepuchare. From Sinwa you climb down to Modi River at the little hamlet of ‘Bamboo’ in 2-3 hours and then climb gradually for another hour to Dovan.
Day 8: Dovan to Deurali (3,300 meters / 5-6 hours)
Above Dovan you enter the region where effects of high altitude are felt. The pace slows down as you gradually climb to another hamlet interestingly called ‘Himalaya’ (2,900m) in 2 hours. After Himalaya enter sparsely vegetated rocky terrain and climb steeply for an hour to Hinku Cave. Deurali is across an arduous moraine with icy crevasses.
Day 9: Deurali to Trek to Annapurna Base Camp (4,200 meters / 5-6 hours)
The trail from Deurali to Machepuchare Base Camp is an avalanche prone area. At times you would have to cross over to the other side of the Modi River to avoid rock fall areas. It will take about 3 hours to get to Machepuchare base Camp at 3,700 m. At Machepuchare Base Camp valley opens up wide and bright with beautiful snow peaks. The trail to Annapurna Base Camp climbs gradually to the snowfield at the edge of a glacier. At base camp you are at an amphitheater surrounded by the world’s highest mountains.
Day 10: Annapurna Base Camp to Bamboo (6-7 hours)
After a beautiful sunrise view over the Annapurna, you will head down slowly to Bamboo, a pretty little settlement. First part of the trail might be steep and slippery, so be cautious.
Day 11: Bamboo to Jhinu Danda (1,760 meters / 5-6 hours)
Follow the same trail that you took to climb up to Chhomrong. Climb down on stone steps to the village of Jhinu, settle into your lodge and then walk to natural hot spring in half an hour. Enjoy the natural hot spring and your last night on the trek
Day 12: Jhinu Danda to Nayapul (6 hours) and Drive back to Pokhara (1.5 hours)
From Jhinu, you traverse 5 hours along the Modi River to Nayapul from where you started your trek. You will be picked up by car for a drive back to Pokhara.
Day 13: Pokhara to Kathmandu
Drive back to Kathmandu alongside Trishuli River. Spend a leisure evening in Kathmandu.
